A BRIGHT NEW BEGINNING

General Information

Attendance
Studies show that students benefit greatly when they develop good attendance habits early in their school career. Good attendance is directly related to achievement. Unless a child is ill, he/she should be on time and in school everyday. If your child is absent, you are expected to call or send a note on the day he/she returns to school.

If students are not in class by the time it is scheduled to begin, they are marked tardy. Perfect attendance is recognized monthly in each class with certificates and student names printed in the school newsletter.

Dress Code
Students who do not dress in uniform must follow the district guidelines. The following items are not permitted for school attire:

  1. Clothing that indicates an affiliation with a gang or intimidating group
  2. Caps, hats, bandannas, hairnets or visors
  3. Oversized pants that fall below the waist
  4. Baggy shorts with knee socks
  5. Belts with lettering or longer than waist appropriate
  6. Halter tops, tank tops, bare midriffs, see-through or fish net clothing
  7. Clothing that does not conceal undergarments at all times
  8. Skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh
  9. Clothing that suggests obscene pictures, wording, and/or drugs, alcohol, smoking, sex or violence
  10. Frayed or unfinished hems
  11. Thongs, thong-like sandals, steel-toed shoes or sandals without a back strap

Emergency Information
Emergency cards are sent home at the beginning of the school year. Local persons to call should be listed on the card. If your child becomes ill or injured at school, you will be called promptly. Therefore, it is extremely important that these cards be kept up-to-date. AUSD board policy states that two emergency phone numbers must be provided on emergency cards.

All Longfellow students and staff participate in drills designed to help practice what to do in the event of a major disaster. During these drills, each adult has a specific assignment. Supplies are kept on campus for emergency use.

Academic Focus
Longfellow places a high priority on the basics; reading, math and language. In the belief that all students can and will learn, Longfellow provides a balanced curriculum that is rigorous and challenging for students. The core of this curriculum is well defined in the California State Standards and sequential with materials, instructions and assessments aligned so that every student is assured a balance of knowledge, skills and values.

Student Progress
We monitor student progress in four ways. They include:

  1. Grade Level Content Standards/ The District has established grade level content standards in each subject area.
  2. Learning Portofolios/ Throughout the school year, teachers may collect samples of each child's work. These samples are dated and kept in a folder for the child. These work samples enable the teacher to share progress with parents, measure individual progress over time, make decisions regarding future instruction and serve as an authentic assessment tools.
  3. 3-Way Conferencing/ Parent/Student/Teacher conferences are held in the fall and in the spring to demonstrate to you your child's school progress. The student demonstrates his/her learning in each of our identified curricular areas. These conferences are used as assessment to measure student learning and will replace the traditional report cards
  4. Assessments/ Students are tested in Language Arts and Math during the year. These are individual assessments given by classroom teachers during which students are able to demonstrate their progress in learning the district standards.

Staff

Principal Leslie Ford says that Longfellow offers a bright new beginning to all children. The Longfellow staff is dedicated to the academic, social and personal development of our students. The staff prides itself on engaging in positive interactions with students in order to build their sense of competence and self-esteem. Longfellow is unique in that it only serves kindergarten and preschool students.

Mrs. Ford encourages parents to attend parent meetings and participate in school activities. By working together, we can ensure that children received the time and opportunity to develop at their own pace and that a child's total development needs are met.
